Recap of Bell's Eccentric Day 2012

Recap of Bell's Eccentric Day 2012

Sometimes Kalamazoo gets a bit well, odd, for lack of a better word right now. One day a year those over the age of 21 are encouraged to “come as you aren’t.” December 7th was Eccentric Day at Bell’s Eccentric Café. The idea is, come out to the pub and spend time with like-minded (or maybe not so like-minded) individuals.

Hank's Tavern in Muskegon

Veteran Restaurateur Hoby Thrasher promised something new for Muskegon with the new Hank’s Tavern, and on Saturday, December 1st he has delivered. The Henry / Sherman St. location is not new; Previous businesses at this location have included a bank and fast food pizza joint with the short-lived Bonfire restaurant being the most recent tenant. However, this time around Hoby has really outdone himself transforming the building which once felt small and cramped to an expansive and vibrant atmosphere which will be sure to impress anyone familiar with the building’s former occupants.

Bell's Tap Takeover at Reno's West

Bell's Tap Takeover at Reno's West

Reno's West will be kicking off the holiday season with a Bell's Tap Takeover this Saturday evening, December 8th. This exciting night with Bell's will feature a full lineup of the renowned Michigan brewery's winter releases and a few surprise, specialty beers to be tapped at the beginning of each hour starting at 6:00 PM. There is always a lot going on at Reno's and this is sure to add to the excitement of the weekend and general holiday atmosphere. Here is a full lineup the beers that will be available:

2012 Wood and Wild Ale Festival at Hopcat

Hopcat gathered up quite the collection of over 40 unique and unusual beers for the 2012 Wood and Wild Ale Festival. Many of the offerings included were aged at Hopcat’s own personal cellar for years prior to being made available for this event. Drafts were available in 5 oz or 10 oz pours, or sample-sized pours if you asked nicely, which I did so as to try the greatest variety of different beers. Kegs were being tapped and untapped regularly throughout the evening so I primarily relied on the staff’s expertise to bring me out the best available and they did a great job. In fact, towards the end of my visit my initial menu was replaced fresh with a new menu with old offerings removed and all of the latest including “on deck” offerings listed.

A Few Great Beers to Pair with Thanksgiving Dinner

In just a few short days, most of us will embark on one of the quintessential events of the American experience: heading home for a 2-3 day death-march of way too much food, family, and football. Yes, it's Thanksgiving, the time to remember how thankful we are for our family, and that we don't live with them every other day of the year as well. As far as the food, Thanksgiving dinners can either be delicious and savory or poorly seasoned and boring--there seems to rarely be an in-between.

However the dinner is where you're going, you're likely going to need (we strongly encourage it, anyway) a few beers to help you survive, especially while watching the Lions. So, we thought we would put together a beer drinking guide to Thanksgiving, a couple beers to sip on throughout the day and then a few to go with each of courses in the traditional Thanksgiving meal. We hope you find it useful and wish you safe and happy travels wherever you're headed this week.
