Hideout Brewing Company launches new collaborative Beer City Pale Ale

Hideout Brewing Company was my first stop on my list to try the new Beer City Pale ale, as their brewmaster Wob is a ringleader of sorts for this new Grand Rapids collaborative brew. The hoppy new beer was an immediate hit among my friends and I, and the focus of many conversations overheard throughout the well attended brewhouse - the Michigan hops being a key factor for many, like myself, who prefer to keep things fresh and local.

High Five Co-Op Benefit at Mulligan’s Pub in Eastown

Currently home to Brewery Vivant and Harmony Brewing Company, I find myself a frequent visitor to Eastown. However, even the days prior to the current craft beer renaissance I can remember Wealthy St and Lake Dr as the original home of the famous Intersection nightclub; host of countless concerts back in the day. The Intersection still hosts a multitude of great events but while it has long since moved downtown (in walking distance from Founders,) the neighboring Mulligan’s Irish Pub remains and has inherited the legendary Intersection stage so as to continue the Eastown concert tradition to the present day.

For this one day a year, the brewery closes it’s doors and takes the party out to the surrounding streets. Advance tickets are highly recommended for this event and if you join the mug club you will receive discounted prices. The “rain or shine” event proved to be shine this year with temperatures in the low 80’s. Beer tickets were available via cash or credit; food was strictly cash.

The First Taste of Perrin Brewing Company at Hopcat

This summer the Greater Grand Rapids area will have another brewery for beer lovers to quench their thirst at: Perrin Brewing Company. Even though they’re not open yet, they had a special “First Drip” tapping last week of their Vanilla Porter at Hopcat in downtown Grand Rapids. I’ve been to Hopcat when it’s busy and slow. On a Tuesday evening they usually draw a decent crowd thanks to their half off beer special starting at 6pm, but last Tuesday was something special.

The Big Red Coq Has Been Released…It’s a Beer

Last week, Brewery Vivant once again tapped an old favorite: Big Red Coq, a “Hoppy Belgo-American Red Ale”. It feels weird saying “old favorite” when referencing something from a brewery that’s less than two years old, but…it seems they have at least one beer and hundreds, if not thousands of followers that make those words good to use.

We need your help for Grand Rapids to WIN Beer City USA!

Grand Rapids is on the cusp of something very exciting. A few years ago, the venerable Yoda of American home brewing, Charlie Papazian, started a national poll contest called, "Beer City USA". The idea was to create a poll that went beyond sales statistics and market research to determine where in the country the most excitement and enthusiasm existed for craft beer. As craft beer has always been more about people rather than huge numbers and output, it was fitting that a poll like this be created. It gave the true lovers of craft beer a voice and the chance to stand up and declare their town, "Beer City USA"!

Recap of 2012 Founders Brewing Co. Black Party

Once again the popularity of Founders Brewing Company drew enough people to form a line outside that seemed to last throughout the day. Last time it was the release of KBS and this time it was their 11th Annual Black Party; a day where they do a tap take-over on themselves making 14 of 16 beers on tap black, seven of which were just for the Black Party.
