Recap of 2013 Wood & Wild Fest at Grand Rapids Hopcat

Once again, Hopcat has outdone themselves with this year’s weekend celebration of Wood & Wild, putting on tap an amazing array of all things barrel aged and/or wild including a selection aged for years in Hopcat’s own underground cellar. Also featured were a limited selection of bottles as well as some Woodford Reserve Barrel-Aged beers released as part of the Beer City Bourbon Barrel challenge.

Brewers Grove tour recap of Grand Rapids

17 Grand Rapids area breweries participated in the latest “Beer City” collaboration effort and this time around the emphasis was all on the trees. Every brewery involved contributed at least one tree-inspired beer recipe ranging from smoked beers, barrel-aged beers and even fruit beers. I spent the launch week visiting breweries to sample as many of the tree beers as possible, and visited a personal record of over 2 dozen breweries in one week’s time!

In the few short years of ArtPrize putting a stamp on downtown Grand Rapids, the city has seen another transformation; the one that has resulted in national recognition with the city’s title as Beer City USA. Recap of Michigan Brewers Guild 16th Annual Summer Beer Festival

Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park is the home to Michigan Brewers Guild’s Annual Summer Beer Festival, one of several events hosted throughout the year. I’ve previously attended the Winter Beer Festival in Comstock Park, but this was my first year to check out the long-running Summer Beer Fest, and like many of the Brewers Guild events this year’s event was a sellout with over 6000 attendees. Note: if planning to attend one of these events, be sure to book your hotel weeks if not months in advance!

Grand Rapids -2013 Beer City USA

Michigan is starting craft beer out with a bang with competition among Michigan cities inciting some of the highest vote getters in last week’s Beer City USA polling. Kalamazoo took 2nd place, with Asheville slipping to 3rd, cementing Michigan’s reputation as The Great Beer State. The only other Michigan city to be nominated, Ann Arbor, rounded off the top 4.

Grand Rapids Beer City USA 2013 - The Time to Vote is Now!

There is no question 2012 was great year for Grand Rapids and beer. A record number of brewery openings included Eastown’s Harmony, Mitten Brewing, and Grand Rapids Brewing Company as well as both Pike 51 and White Flame in Hudsonville, Perrin in Comstock Park and Rockford Brewing Company. Additionally Grand Rapid’s most successful brewery Founders celebrated their 15-year anniversary in style which included the release of their 15% Bolt Cutter Barleywine. But perhaps the defining moment in 2012 was the nomination and securing of the title Beer City USA in a tied vote along with previous year victors Asheville, North Carolina.

One again, beer lovers, St. Patty's day is right around the corner. It's a day full of hearty food and hearty drinks, but Craft drinkers find themselves surrounded by macro 'green beer' and a rather intense general love for Guinness.
