Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery and Supply

The homebrew supply store has traditionally been a multi-purpose business, usually including wine making supplies, craft goods, and/or existing as an expansion of a more traditional liquor store model to appeal to the broadest audience. Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery and Supply in Ada Village plans to try a new model by putting the focus exclusively on beer. By including a smaller 3 barrel homebrew-like brewing system, the brewery plans to give prospective brewers the novelty of being able to try many recipes in a pub setting and assisting in the brewing process by helping to tailor recipes to the customer’s preference.
Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery and SupplyThe opening date has been set for September 7th with an initial planned tap lineup including IPAs, a wit beer, ESB, and a molasses and Michigan maple porter. Plans are to expand to 12 taps in the near future to include a handful of mainstays and at least 3 or 4 taps dedicated to rotating experimental batches. The majority of the recipes will be open source, allowing patrons to purchase the ingredients of their favorite brews and reproduce and tweak on their own. Additionally, a guest homebrew tap is  planned to be featured regularly beginning with a by homebrewer John Wiechertjes, demonstrating how a grapefruit flavor can be achieved with the use of certain hop varieties.

Gravel Bottom’s initial plans do not include any food provided on premises but plenty of restaurants are available including several in the adjacent strip mall (even a McDonalds,) which are welcome to be brought inside the pub or enjoyed in the outdoor beer garden. Possible collaborations with local restaurants are certainly options in the future, as the brewery plans to put an emphasis on local talent which extends even to the artwork decorating the walls. The brewery plans to be open Wednesdays through Sundays initially with the off days being devoted to brewing more beer. The store component will feature everything from basic items and kits to as many as 80 different types of bulk grains available for the experienced brewer. On-site homebrew classes where students will be able to view the brewing process first-hand as the brewing system is in plain view of the pub. Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery and Supply promises to offer a unique and educational brewing experience that is sure to secure them a place in the greater Grand Rapids “Beer City” community.
