Sausage-Eating Contest Hosted at Grand Rapids Brewing Co. To Celebrate One Year Anniversary

GRBC to host anniversary party with $500 sausage-eating contest, limited addition brews, and live music
 
Grand Rapids Brewing Company (GRBC) will celebrate its one year anniversary as Michigan’s first all-organic brewpub with a sausage-eating contest, signature beers, and live music. The party will be held at GRBC on Saturday, Dec. 14 beginning at 11 a.m.

To Celebrate One Year AnniversaryThe winner of the sausage eating contest will receive a $500 grand prize for eating the most cheddar brats in five minutes. A GRBC gift card will be awarded to the second and third place finishers. There will be a $10 entry fee for the contest which will be donated to Kids’ Food Basket – Grand Rapids. The competition will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday.

GRBC will also release five limited-edition draft brews at the event including:
  • Philanthropist – A barleywine aged in bourbon barrels (GRBC anniversary brew)
  • Brewer's Grove – An IPA aged in bourbon barrels infused with spruce  (gold medal at World Beer Championship)
  • Angostura Moundmaker – A Belgian strong dark ale aged in an angostura bitters bourbon barrel (gold medal at World Beer Championship)
  • Polish Eagle – An imperial porter aged in bourbon barrels (gold medal at World Beer Championship)
  • Distinguished Eagle – An imperial stout  aged in vanilla, cherry bitters and sorghum bourbon barrels 

The five beers will be on draft beginning at 11 a.m. and available while supplies last. The first 100 guests will receive a free GRBC logoed pint glass.Additionally, GRBC’s anniversary beer, Philanthropist, will be available for purchase in 22oz bottles (limit two per person) while supplies last.

The party will conclude with a performance by Scott Pellegrom Trio (SP3). The rhythmist group will perform at GRBC from 8 to 11 p.m.

In the first year of production, GRBC achieved the following:
  • GRBC brewed 50 different beers so far this year
  • As of its anniversary, GRBC brewed more than 1,230 barrels of beer (By year end, 1,400-1,500 barrels will have been brewed)
  • Approximately 1,200 pounds of hops (including 10 different varieties) and nearly 100,000 pounds of malt was spent
  • GRBC brewers took home a total of 15 medals at the 2013 World Beer Championship (three bronze, seven silver, five gold) which is the most of any brewery in Michigan
  • Approximately 26,000 pints of GRBC’s award-winning organic beer were sold at the brewpub
  • GRBC’s chefs also received accolades for their work on the GRBC menu including the 2013 Grandwich entry which took first place in the popular vote and second place in the judged contest and a first place entry at The B.O.B.’s Chili, Brews and Blues chili cook off.
  • More than 85 percent of GRBC’s solid waste is diverted from landfills
  • The brewery also donated 100 percent of its spent grains from brewing operations to local farmers to and bakers
