Rat Fest 2012 at Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti

Rat Fest is an annual event held at The Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, Mi. This event is special because it gives local small batch brewing clubs from the Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit area a chance to showcase their favorite recipes. Each brew club gets a chance to brew their favorite recipe along side one of the brewers for Arbor Brewing Co. on their 10 gallon homebrewing system. Throughout the event ticket holders get to sample 33 insanely unique beers and vote on their favorite.
The Crowd at Rat Fest 2012 Included with you ticket was a tasting glass, unlimited beer samples, and an appetizer buffet. The clubs featured were The Ann Arbor Brewers Guild, Brighton Brew Club, Motor City Mashers, Muskrat Mashers, Sons of Liberty, and The Ugly Mug. Some of Paul and I's favorite beers were the Honey Red Eye by Ugly Mug. This was an awesome combination of a beautiful amber colored beer brewed with honey and topped off with a fresh brewed shot of expresso. The Tangerine Coffee IPA was a wonderfully tasty beer withan amazing tangerine flavor that went well with the hop flavor. The Motor City Mashers featured an Imperial Stout float. This was an Imperial Stout with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. After that sample, I say bye bye to the traditional soda float!

The appetizer buffet was a nice spread of soft pretzels, baked mac n cheese, meatballs, and chips and salsa. The macaroni and cheese had crumbled potato chips baked on top! All perfect foods to pair with the beers. Paul partiularly liked the Mac & Chesse with crushed potato chips on top.Rat Fest 2012 - Rat Trap Beer Handles

The coolest thing about this event is that all the brew clubs are getting to showcase their creative side. This creative freedom led to some amazing off the wall beers that you wouldn't get to experience anywhere else. Where else would you get to try a Tangerine Coffee IPA, a Jalapeno Brown, or a Loaded Baked Potato Beer? With all the crazy kinds of beers you're sure to find something for everyone and I would say even if it sounds too off the wall for you, try it anyway becuase you might be surprised. Paul never thought he would like The Tangerine Coffee IPA but that ended up being his favorite.

What I loved about this event was the rat theme throughout the event. They had everything from rat trap tap beer handles to rat inspired foods. If you like seeing beer creativity in full bloom, Rat Fest is the place for you. Paul and I are for sure going to be attending next year. I am excited to see what cool concoxions they come up with next year.
