Marquette, The U.P.’s Beer City

Even though Marquette is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula, at a little under 22,000 people, it’s hardly a booming metropolis. Being home to Northern Michigan University helps give it a vibrancy unique to the U.P. It wasn’t a surprise to me that, on a trip up there a few weeks ago, I found the city’s microbreweries to really cool spaces doing some quality beer.

There are many different factors that influence this list, primarily of which is dependent on audience demand; who has the biggest lines and draws the biggest crowds. Another factor is beer offerings, what these breweries are bringing to the festival that create a huge demand among those attending.

Weather, Marquette Combine for Successful U.P. Fall Beer Fest

Saturday, September 8, was your typical, run-of-the-mill late summer day in Michigan: chilly, cloudy, partly sunny, fairly warm, and with periods of light showers and no showers at all. Also included: U.P. Beer Fest 2012, set in Lower Mattson Harbor Park in beautiful Marquette, MI. The wife and I (well, mostly I) were anticipating a great day sampling the wares of more than 35 Michigan craft brewers, along with some local food and musical entertainment. In all, we were looking forward to five hours of controlled and polite beer mayhem!

U.P. Fall Beer Fest Returns to Marquette’s Mattson Lower Harbor Park

Michigan Brewers Guild Hosts 4th Annual Event – Saturday, September 8

More than 30 Michigan craft breweries will gather at Mattson Lower Harbor Park on Saturday, September 8 for the 4th Annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival where attendees will be able to sample from more than 160 different locally-crafted beers – along with food prepared by area restaurants and live, local entertainment.
