Harmony Hall opened this past October in Grand Rapids on the West Side, located at 401 Stocking Avenue NW in the building formerly occupied by Little Mexico restaurant. The new brewery has been in the works for over a year with demand exceeding capacity and no further room for on-site expansion at the Eastown location of Harmony Brewing Company which opened in 2012. The new brewery location serves to both supplement the original Harmony location while offering a unique atmosphere and experience of it’s own.

Recap of 2014 Winter Beer Festival

This year’s Winter Beer Festival at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park was another one for the record books. A record number of breweries, a record number of beers, and of course, once again selling out in a record time of just a few hours. For an epic drinking excursion of this magnitude, a degree of pre-fest sustenance is desirable, and I found mine to be had at Brewery Vivant’s Brewer’s Big Breakfast. Menu items ranging from Chicken & Waffles, PB&J Crepe Cake, or signature Duck Nachos were paired up with Monk-Mosa’s (OJ & Farmhand,) plus all of Vivant’s speciality beer fest beers including the Love Shadow barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout made for a great head start for the big event.

Hopcat, Harmony Brewing, and the B.O.B. host Beer City Bourbon Barrel Challenge

While previous Beer City collaborations have found me travelling to a dozen or more breweries in one week, this current challenge brought multiple breweries to single convenient locations over several weeks. This time the theme was bourbon barrel-aged beers, with numerous breweries offering up their best barrel-aged releases for the challenge. Harmony Brewing Company hosted the first week, with Hopcat, and the B.O.B.’s Brewery hosting subsequent weeks.

A Guide to Beer City, Vegan Style

A Guide to Beer City, Vegan Style

In addition to being widely recognized for the beer accolades, Grand Rapids also has a great reputation for being a vegan-friendly City. One may not immediately recognize the two things as going hand in hand, but in actuality there are some surprising connections. To start with, beer as a beverage can be a good fit in vegan diet, with only a few styles (i.e. Milk Stout) being inherently non-vegan. So where are some good places to enjoy a vegan meal along with your favorite Michigan Craft beers?

Brewers Grove tour recap of Grand Rapids

17 Grand Rapids area breweries participated in the latest “Beer City” collaboration effort and this time around the emphasis was all on the trees. Every brewery involved contributed at least one tree-inspired beer recipe ranging from smoked beers, barrel-aged beers and even fruit beers. I spent the launch week visiting breweries to sample as many of the tree beers as possible, and visited a personal record of over 2 dozen breweries in one week’s time!

Harmony Brewing Company to host first High Five Co-Op Buy-In Party on Sept. 9th

High Five Co-op Brewing will be celebrating their successful incorporation as a legal entity with their first ever buy-in party to be held at Harmony Brewing Co. at 6 PM on Monday, September 9th. The event is the first of several planned and will include the tapping of the Co-Op recipe Peppercorn and Michigan Mint Wheat IPA. The brew evolved from a series of previous tastings of which variations of the Wheat IPA has proven to be one of the favorites. Other High Five recipes will debut soon, likely to be more at Harmony Brewing Co. and other locations throughout Beer City USA and include more opportunities to buy-in to the Co-Op.
