Gravel Bottom opened with a fresh idea for West Michigan, a microbrewery paired with homebrew supply store.
The brewery is embracing the local homebrew movement by featuring a regular guest tap and inviting patrons to participate in the brewing experience. The brew system is in plain view of the bar allowing for an immediacy usually reserved for a brewery tour without having to leave one’s seat at the bar. I have found the casual friendly atmosphere a welcome breath of fresh air from the mania often associated with West Michigan’s recent explosion in brewery growth.

Discussions for a collaborative beer began early after my first visit with Gravel Bottom’s owner Matt Michiels and assistant Brett Lanschied. A few different beer styles were discussed initially and I settled upon the “Beer Hound Brown” ale with the desire to design a beer which my wife & I would enjoy equally, approved by both Beer Hounds and Beer Houndettes alike!

Gravel Bottom has provided an original recipe which is being developed further via small batch pilot recipes with the assistance of the Muskegon Ottawa Brewers (the MOB). Muskegon’s new Brew House coffee shop and their coffee supplier Uncommon Coffee Roasters has offered to provide cold-brewed coffee to enhance the recipe also. Once finalized, the recipe will be made available for homebrewers interested in trying out themselves.  The recipe will then be brought back to Gravel Bottom for large scale production; keep a lookout here at I’m a Beer Hound for details on release party soon.
