West Michigan has a solid Irish Stout connection that no one can dispute. Decades ago, Guinness beer was actually brewed right in Muskegon. Founded in 2000, Muskegon is also home to Michigan Irish Music Festival, held in September of each year. A few years ago, and in conjunction with this festival, Schell's of Minnesota introduced "Irish Fest Stout" and rolled it out to tap rooms across Muskegon as well.
Hennessy's in conjunction with Saugatuck Brewing Co. has also brought a new Irish Stout to the Muskegon MarketDespite it's popularity as a more flavorful dark beer, the Irish Fest Stout appears to be being phased out of the Muskegon market. I was able to have a recent draft at Handsome Henry's, and it can still be found in bottled variety at Ladd's. At this year's Irish Fest St. Patrick's Day Party, the Stout promoted was DESL from Royal Oak, Michigan's MillKing It Productions.

Rachel: A Turkey Based Hennessy's, in conjunction with Saugatuck Brewing Co., has also brought a new Irish Stout to the Muskegon Market. Boldly placing it smack between Guinness and Smithwick's, some purists might call this sacrilege. The new Stout is even being served with a nitro tap and many have commented on it's similarities with Ireland's most famous ale. Fans of Michigan beer can also rejoice; for in addition to a variety of imports, presently the featured Michigan drafts include: Saugatuck's Neapolitan Milk Stout, Arbor Brewing Bavarian Bliss, New Holland Full Circle, Founder Centennial + Dirty Bastard, and Bell's Oberon and Two-Hearted Ale.

The restaurant and pub has a stage for live music where live jazz, blues, and folk are often appreciated. Happy Hour at the bar includes the $5 burger and beer special, including a choice of variety of burgers (including lamb.) Only a few beers qualify at this price, but a small upgrade of 50 cents will get you the new Stout if preferred. There is also a fine dining area and I highly recommend trying the Rachel, a turkey based "alterna-reuben."
