Currently, only one such brewery exists in the United State; the Black Star Co-Op in Austin Texas. However, Dallas McCulloch and his cohorts plan to change this with the High Five Co-Op, the first such brewery to be conceived in the Midwest and to be located in the Grand Rapids area.Currently, Committees have been formed and have been meeting regularly; covering everything from the brewing, to legalities, to public relations. A "Meet & Greet" was recently held at GOJO Ethiopian Cuisine in Eastown Grand Rapids, followed by a gathering at Dallas' house where I was able to meet up, chat, and try a variety of brews. Dallas himself is an award-winning brewer and was also happy to share some of his own very enjoyable hard cider with me.
Dallas received a boost late last year when this idea of a local based Co-Op was awarded $5,000 based on a presentation at the 5X5 night. But the money is not what this is about, if nothing else the award has helped the message reach the masses. If your goal is to "Cash in" on the Michigan Microbrew movement, than High Five Co-Op is probably not for you; It's about contributing to the local community, brewing some great beer, and being able to participate in the experience; and just as importantly having fun.
