Grand Rapids Beer City USA 2013 - The Time to Vote is Now!

There is no question 2012 was great year for Grand Rapids and beer. A record number of brewery openings included Eastown’s Harmony, Mitten Brewing, and Grand Rapids Brewing Company as well as both Pike 51 and White Flame in Hudsonville, Perrin in Comstock Park and Rockford Brewing Company. Additionally Grand Rapid’s most successful brewery Founders celebrated their 15-year anniversary in style which included the release of their 15% Bolt Cutter Barleywine. But perhaps the defining moment in 2012 was the nomination and securing of the title Beer City USA in a tied vote along with previous year victors Asheville, North Carolina.
Grand Rapids Society of Beer helped promote their inaugural year as Beer City with a series of collaborative brews which included a variety of styles and participating breweries from surrounding areas. Launching the series was the Hideout along with multiple other breweries with the Beer City Pale Ale. In the fall, the Grand Pumpkin promotion included beers from Michigan Beer Cellar, Brewery Vivant and a Pumpkin Doppelbock from Hopcat. Most recently the “Beer City Grand Series” featured imperial strength beers such as the B.O.B.’s Robert the Barrel Imperial Stout, Tri Power Triple IPA from Jaden James and the Imperial Hopnocker from Schmohz Brewing.

Other cities in the running for this year’s title include last year’s 1st place joint victor (and previous winner,) Asheville, NC along with some incredible competition such as Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI. (These are all cities that along with Grand Rapids, are automatically eligible to be voted for in 2013 based on previous votes of 400 or more.) Some of Grand Rapids’ stiffest competition is likely to come from Michigan’s other great beer cities. Leading the nominations to be newly eligible to be voted for this year were Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Final voting will take place beginning Monday May 6th and ending on Friday May 10th with the winning city announced on Monday May 13th just in time for American Craft Beer Week. The Beer City USA polling is conducted each year by The Complete Joy of Homebrewing author Charlie Papazian via the website examiner.com.
