Friday November 16th at 4:30 PM marked the Peanut Butter Stout tapping party at B.O.B.’s Brewery
in downtown Grand Rapids. The event included live music provided by Sam Kenny at 5:00 PM and a contest to guess the number in a peanut-filled growler with many prizes including Gilmore Collection gift cards of up to $100. The Stout was available for a limited time for $1.00 pours and the already insanely cheap $25.00 lifetime mug club memberships were discounted to $20.00 for attendees. Mug Club membership includes $1.00 pours on Thursdays, discounted food, and of course an engraved mug.
I made it to the event a little late after the party had already wound down, but I was offered complimentary peanut M&M’s and the extremely delicious PB Stout at the everyday $2.00 mug club member price. Brewmaster John Svoboda was on hand to discuss his beers and also the latest explosion in the Michigan (and especially Grand Rapids) beer scene. One interesting development is just down the road from the B.O.B., the new Grand Rapids Brewing Company will be soon opening Michigan’s first all organic brewery. John was a brewmaster at the former Grand Rapids Brewing Company in it’s previous Centerpointe Mall incarnation out on 28th Street, and some of the original equipment John used to brew on has made the move as well. John recommended I try his new 8% ABV Weizen Boc, but he didn’t need to twist my arm; a $6.00 growler (also mug club prices,) was already waiting for me in their fridge.
Being I was little late for the always excellent Monkey Bar’s kitchen (which shares the lower level with B.O.B.’s Brewery,) afterwards I made my way up to Gilly’s, another of the many fine restaurants the B.O.B. has to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they still had the B.O.B.’s fresh-hopped Harvest Ale on tap, which made an excellent complement to seafood trio special featuring salmon and a sweet pea sauce. If you missed out on the Peanut Butter tapping, keep in mind that every Wednesday, B.O.B.’s brewery is doing .10 cent 4 oz sample sized microbrews from 5 PM - 8 PM. Check out the beer and better yet join the mug club!
