Founders held their third annual Firkin Freezeout this year on February 6, 2016. For the event, Founders tapped over 40 different firkins outside in their beer garden. Similar to last year’s event, tickets were available inside the brewery for $2 and were good for a 5 oz. sample pour with full pints available for 2 tickets. Deli features for the event included beef stroganoff and sloppy joes, as well as s’mores brownies for dessert. Also back by popular demand this year was the live ice sculpture.
This year Founders gave the Firkin treatment to 8 different base beers. These were the Rye Stout, Pale Joe, Sleeper Cell West Coast IPA, Curmudgeon Old Ale, Red’s Rye IPA, Porter, Azzaca IPA, and Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale. Common ingredients paired with each of these beers included Vanilla, Coffee, Cinnamon, and Oak Chips. Some of the more intriguing offerings of this year’s firkins included Dirty Bastard with raisins, peanut butter, and blueberry extract and Sleeper Cell with sliced jalapenos and apricots. The event started when the doors opened at 11 a.m. with only a small line however the brewery was eventually filled to capacity once the freezeout was well underway.

Founders also has recently announced the opening of a new off-site location to supplement production, warehousing, and distribution. The new location is in close proximity to the existing brewery and will not have it’s own taproom. Speciality releases including barrel aged beers and Backstage Series beers will be brewed and packaged at the new location. The first Backstage Release of 2016 has been announced and it will be the return of Mango Magnifico con Calor high gravity beer brewed with mango and habaneros. The release is scheduled to hit distribution on March 1. This year’s KBS week is scheduled from Monday, March 7 until the taproom release party on Saturday, March 12 beginning at 11 a.m, with wider distribution beginning April 1.
