Recap of Odd Side Ales’ 3-Year Anniversary Celebration

In 2010, Grand Haven’s first and only brewery, Odd Side Ales, opened in the old downtown piano factory complex. This past St. Patrick’s Day weekend marked their 3-year anniversary, and quite an eventful past year it has been. In recent months, the brewery has seen the selection of brews grow from 16 taps to 22; the days of struggling to keep up with pub demand are now in the past. This has been achieved by moving the production offsite to new facility which also allows for increased distribution outside the pub. In past years, OSA has featured limited run bottles like their famous Morning Wood and Lucid Dream, now a new bottling line is allowing more regular releases including Citra Pale Ale in both the barrel-aged and non barrel-aged varieties.

Odd Side Ale enthusiasts get up early on Black Friday for release of Morning Wood

Odd Side Ales encouraged patrons to “bring pancakes and wear your pajamas” or in other words BYOB (Bring your own breakfast,) with them supplying plenty of beer for the 9:00 AM Black Friday release of their Morning Wood Bourbon Barrel Age Coffee Stout. This year’s release was more limited with only 400 bottles (down from 600 last year,) however the ABV was increased slightly from 7% to 9%. Several bottles of last year’s were circulating for comparison. Them Two Guys provided entertainment throughout the morning.

2012 Wood and Wild Ale Festival at Hopcat

Hopcat gathered up quite the collection of over 40 unique and unusual beers for the 2012 Wood and Wild Ale Festival. Many of the offerings included were aged at Hopcat’s own personal cellar for years prior to being made available for this event. Drafts were available in 5 oz or 10 oz pours, or sample-sized pours if you asked nicely, which I did so as to try the greatest variety of different beers. Kegs were being tapped and untapped regularly throughout the evening so I primarily relied on the staff’s expertise to bring me out the best available and they did a great job. In fact, towards the end of my visit my initial menu was replaced fresh with a new menu with old offerings removed and all of the latest including “on deck” offerings listed.
