Hocat - East Lansing Opens with a Lions Roar with Record Breaking 100 Short's Beer on Tap!

The much anticipated HopCat East Lansing grand opening was officially open to the public Thurs.  Aug 22nd, 2013.  This record breaking grand opening hosting the world’s largest taps take over boasting its 100 draft lines featuring Michigan’s own Short’s Brewing Company.  Short’s brought 70 of its finest portfolio and 30 new rare and experimental beers.  The first 200 people in line were awarded FREE CRACK FRIES for a year and bragging rights to being the first to taste and experience the newest East Lansing bar and be a part of this special occasion.
The first beer enthusiasts started lining up at 7pm Wednesday night 16 hours before doors opened at 11am. People of all ages and from around the Michigan and surrounding states camped out on the sidewalk through rain and lack of shelter to be the first few awarded the FREE CRACK FRIES and Short’s Brewed Libations. By 9am 400 + people were now in line, a line that wrapped around the building and down the street. Once the doors opened the waves of people began to enter.  Once sat the patrons received free Crack Fries and the first chance to order from its 100 Short’s beer tap takeover  list and enjoy the delicious menu.

The Menu is food your mom would make if she drank beer.  Decadent Entries such as Great Burgers like the Cowboy Burger, tasty sandwiches like the Porter Braised Beef Sandwich and sharable apps, salads, desserts and of course the Crack fries.  (full menu @ ) To ensure everyone had a fighting chance to sample the huge variety of Short’s beer glass sizes ranged from a 4oz half pours and an 8oz full pour.  With a 100 beers on draft it is tough to say which ones were the best but some of the standout beers were the BOURBON WIZARD 11% American Bourbon Barrel American Barley Wine, EMPRESS CATHRINE 8% Russian Imperial Stout, ABNORMAL GENIUS a 8.3% Imperial English Style Ale with Honey and Sunflowers,  The S’MORE STOUT an 6.5% American Stout with Milk Chocolate, Marshmallow & Graham Crackers,  BOURBON EVIL URGES 8.5% Bourbon Barrel Belgium-Style Strong Dark Ale with Vanilla,  and the JUICY TREE 7.5%  Experimental IPA with Blue Spruce Tips, Juniper, & Cranberries.

Was it worth the wait and media frenzy for this premier beer bar and restaurant to hit the streets?  The unanimous  answer is “Yes!”.   Not only was this a great day for East Lansing, Hop Cat, and Shorts Brewing Company, it was a milestone day for Michigan craft beer!

About Short’s Brewing Co.:

In April of 2004, Short’s Brewing Company opened its doors in the quaint village of Bellaire, MI. Beer was the mission, liberation was the movement. The philosophy was (and continues to be) to bring an appreciation of craft beer to Michigan with product education and creativity. Nine years later, Short's is the fourth largest craft beer producer in the state of Michigan with bottle and keg distribution throughout the Great Lakes State. Believing in the power of the smallness, Short's plans to continue focusing its energies close to home and supporting what it calls the "SBC Michigan Stimulus Package".
