What's Pouring at Michigan Rock n Brew

The Michigan Rock n Brew event in Lansing is quickly approaching and the list of the beers that will be available has been released. Here's everything you need to know to be prepared.
Bell's Oberon Beer

First, Bell's Oberon Ale. Their classic, American Pale Wheat Ale. This beer has become known throughout the country as one of the premier American wheatbeers. Available from spring through early fall, it has become synonymous with Michigan summers. As its fame grows,it still maintains a solid rating of 87 with Beer Advocate, and each year the batch is a little bit different and unique.

Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale

Bell's will also be bringing along their renowned Two Hearted Ale. This is an American IPA that comes in at a strong 7.00% ABV. It is consistently a player in almost all top worldwide beer polls and has been another of Bells' great successes. Heavy on citrus and caramel notes, it pours a pretty golden color with very little head. It finishes strongly hoppy and bitter. It is a tremendous beer and something that Michigan should be proud to claim its own. Beer Advocate gives Two Hearted Ale a 95.

Founder's Pale Ale Beer

Founder's Pale will be available. This is a classic, golden brown American Pale Ale. Light, crisp, malty, and a gentle dry finish from the hops. This is one Founders flagship beers and is available all year-round. It's perfect for an outdoor festival and won't blow your sails over as it comes in at 5.4% ABV. Beer Advocate gives it a solid score of 84

Founder's Red's Rye Beer

Founders Red's Rye will also be available. Red's Rye is another staple, year-round beer from Founders. It is a strongly hopped, Rye Ale that comes in stronger at 6.6% ABV. This beer has a reddish brown color and a sharp, forward leaning flavor of caramel and citrus, but the hoppiness also lingers at the end. This is one of our favorite beers at Beer Hound headquarters and is arguably Founders' best work. Beer Advocate gives Red's Rye an "exceptional" rating of 94

New Holland Brewing Company The Poet Oatmeal Stout

The Poet, an Oatmeal Stout from New Holland, will be available. The Poet is a classic oatmeal stout. Comforting and warm, it has plenty of chocolate & creamy notes and finishes with a malty, hoppy bitterness that is as pronounced as it is gentle. It is also very "session-able" at 5.2% ABV. Beer Advocate gives it a solid rating of 88 and, apropos of nothing, it is my wife's favorite beer.

New Holland Brewing Company Full Circle

New Holland will also be represented by their Full Circle, a German Kolsch style beer. Coming in at a modest 4.9% ABV, this is another great hot-day session ale. It pours a cloudy yellow and has a gentle smoky-caramel aroma and taste. Beer Advocate gives this beer a decent rating of 83.

Brewery Vivant Farm Hand Saison

Brewery Vivant's Farm Hand Ale will also be available. This is a classic, French-style Farm House Saison. It is a crisp, refreshing beer with minimal carbonation and comes in at a modest 5.00%. It pours a cloudy, golden-orange and has notes of fruit and soap with a tart, citrus finish. This is Vivant's, who is relatively new to the party, flagship beer. Beer Advocate gives it an average rating of 78, although I think that is a bit unfair. As Vivant's influence grows and their products are more understood/available, I believe their influence and reputation will grow and develop as well.

Saugatuck DeWylde Berry Wheat

Saugatuck will be bringing their Delilah DeWylde Berry Wheat, a new offering from them this year. This is a tart, raspberry Fruit Beer and is still very fresh to the market. Reviews have been mixed, but if you like fruit beers, give it a shot.

Arbor Brewing will also be bringing along a beer that is yet to be determined.

Keweenaw Brewing Company Widowmaker Black Ale

Keweenaw Brewing Company will also have a couple beers available in cans. Their Widowmaker Black Ale will be on hand. This is an American Black Ale that has the distinctive raisin, dark chocolate, and coffee flavor that is characteristic in a Black Ale. It is also creamy and surprisingly subtle for a black ale. It is an enjoyable beer. Beer Advocate gives it an average score of 78.

Keweenaw Brewing Company Red Jacket Amber Ale

Keweenaw will also feature their Red Jacket Amber Ale, a pretty standard American Amber Ale. It has a sweet, caramel flavor with that slightly metallic finish that is characteristic of red ales. It is enjoyable and very drinkable. Beer Advocate gives it a good score of 80
