Griffin Claw Brewing Company opens with award-winning brews

Award-winning brews like the White Cap Wit or Red Rock Flanders Red may not be familiar to everyone, but they certainly have a well deserved reputation among festival goers and Birmingham-area brewery visitors. At the new Griffin Claw Brewing Company, brewmaster Dan Rogers (who has previously brewed alongside both Pierre Celis and Joe Short,) now has the opportunity to take these and other brews previously perfected in pub size batches at the Big Rock Chophouse to a whole new level.
Birmingham is the headquarters for Griffin Claw’s new state of the art brewing facility which has capabilities comparable to Michigan’s top breweries. In addition to the production facility, the location features a pub and beer garden. The food menu includes starters that range from salads and pretzels up to a full pound of fries to be enjoyed with the beer. Meals offered include favorites like Mexican fare, mac & cheese, fish & chips, and the 1/2 pound Claw Burger. Kid’s meals, sodas, and desserts are also available.

During my visit, I opted for a beer flight to try the many different styles represented at Griffin Claw. I started with the Bretta-fermented Saison St. Clair (without the optional shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup,) one of a handful of sour beers available here. I also tried the wonderful Weizenheimer Hefeweizen, a very authentic German-style wheat beer complete. I rounded out my flight with some hoppier and darker selections, the also excellent Brown Ale and the Go Figure Black IPA. Griffin Claw’s plans include distribution via bottle, can, and keg so be on the lookout especially if in the Detroit area, but classics like Norm’s Raggedy-Ass Ale, a highly sought after IPA, have already made there way to the Michigan’s west side. (The Grand Rapids Twisted Rooster location currently has it on tap!) Be sure to ask for Griffin Claw at your favorite beer bars and restaurants.
