northport brewery review

The village of Northport sits near the very tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. It is home to wineries, phenomenal eateries, and most importantly, Northport Brewing. This quaint brewery is located on West Nagonaba Street, just a mere three blocks from the village marina and Northport Bay. The atmosphere inside the brewery and in Northport is so laid back that even a quick visit feels like you’re on vacation.
The majority of the seating is placed outdoors and there is a large, stone fireplace for chilly evenings. Live music is often a large draw on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with many local bands playing well into the night. The brewery is often buzzing with a mix of excited tourists, area farmers, and local regulars. Inside, you can find large, communal tables and an abundance of board games to choose from.

There are eight beers on tap at a time, as well as many bottled varieties available for purchase. The Cherry Saison is a must-try; at 7.6ABV it is full of strength with just a hint of very tart cherries. The Northern Queen Stout certainly lives up to her name as literally being the Queen of stouts. This Queen is one hefty lady, yet finishes smooth and delicious. Flights are $7, an 8oz glass is $3, pints are $5.50, 22oz bottles are $10, and growlers are only $13. If you hadn’t already noticed, these are true Northern Michigan prices.

What’s a brewery without good food to accompany it? Self-serve popcorn is always available for free and a delightful food truck sits on the patio of Northport Brewing. Earth, Wind, & Fryer serves up insane snacks and sandwiches such as pickled scotch eggs, the nan burger, and the duck ham sandwich.

Though you may be slightly put-off by the long trek up to Northport, don’t be. M22 is famously known for its scenic views along multiple Lake Michigan bays. The drive is well worth it, and you may only do it once; once you get to Northport, you’ll want to stay forever.
