brown ale photo

As with most standard American styles, Brown Ale was born in Europe. The earliest English Ales were brown in color, using “brown” malt – base malt that had been kilned over a hardwood fire. These early beers were prized for their smokiness and dark color, and the first reference to brown ales was in 1750, by way of Partigyle Brewing.

The Buck hosts Barrel-Aged Beer Fest on Jan 29th & Jan 30th

The weather forecast for the end of January is still calling for below freezing temperatures. Stay warm and join us at The Buck on January 29th and 30th from 4:00 PM to close for the First Annual Barrel Aged Beer Fest, where the temperature even on the heated, outside deck will be nice and toasty warm. Make sure to mark this event on your calendar, and remember that there is no entry fee.

Ashley’s of Westland hosts 2013 Brewery Throwdown

For the third year in a row, Ashley’s of Westland is hosting a friendly competition featuring eight different breweries. The field this year contains a great mixture of both long-time favorites and some up and comers. Five of the eight are Michigan breweries, and the other three do a fine job of representing the rest of the country. The first round will feature four beers from each brewery, with the winner being determined by the total glasses sold. The second round features 6 beers per brewery, and the final round will feature eight. In the past, many of the breweries participating have brought a nice combination of their standards as well as highly sought after ones, sometimes even beers never served outside of their own brewpubs. One of the most exciting parts of the two previous throwdowns has been the opportunity it has provided for Ashley’s customers to interact with personnel from the breweries who are on hand.

The Top 25 Michigan Beers

The Top 25 Michigan Beers

A top 25 list is quite the challenge, I can't emphasize that enough. It was a very difficult process for me to get a solidified list because there is so much amazing beer in this state!

Chill, Wind, and a Little Rain Won't Deter a Soldout Crowd at Detroit Fall Beer Fest

As always, the Michigan Brewers Guild Detroit Fall Beer Festival didn't disappoint. With 60 breweries and over 450 beers available, there was enough to satisfy everyone's thirst. This is the second year they offered the festival on Friday and the 5th year on Saturday, and I really enjoy it because the breweries showcase their fall seasonal beers such as Oktoberfests, Pumpkin Beers, Brown Ales, Stouts, Barleywines, and different barrel-aged beers.

Recap of Michigan Brewers Guild 16th Annual Summer Beer Festival

Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park is the home to Michigan Brewers Guild’s Annual Summer Beer Festival, one of several events hosted throughout the year. I’ve previously attended the Winter Beer Festival in Comstock Park, but this was my first year to check out the long-running Summer Beer Fest, and like many of the Brewers Guild events this year’s event was a sellout with over 6000 attendees. Note: if planning to attend one of these events, be sure to book your hotel weeks if not months in advance!

Recap of Inaugural Lansing Beer Fest

The first annual Lansing Beer Festival rounding out Lansing Beer Week was a tremendous success, and we want to thank everyone who helped pull it off. From Roxanne and her staff at the REO Town Pub to Steve from Motor City Brew Tours, all the breweries in attendance, Fork in the Road and Sir Pizza, our volunteers and everyone who bought a ticket and came out, we roundly applaud you for your support and commitment to our project and the growing of these events in our city.
